SAYFO COMMEMORATION EVENT, ST. PETER CHURCH

May,26 2015

On Friday May 15, the St. Peter Syriac Orthodox Youth Organization organized an event commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the SAYFO Syriac people genocide. After a month of dedication and hard work, the members of the Youth were able to convey to the public the massacre of the Syriac people through a photo and children’s gallery, a reenactment of the slaughtering of families in the villages, and a church program.

Beginning in the year 1914, during World War I, thousands of Syriac people were violently uprooted from their homes and forced to relocate. The dangerous and strenuous journey from Turkey to Syria cost many refugees their lives, while many others were brutally assaulted and dehumanized. For the last 100 years, the truth about SAYFO has been passed down through the generations by written and word of mouth. This event has given those poor souls who sacrificed themselves a medium to express their victimization and the travesties against them.

The youth of St. Peter welcomed and informed attendees through a walk-through museum that portrayed the atrocities committed against our people. Approximately 30 – 40 photos were displayed for people to view. Next attendees were led to the Children’s gallery which reflected the work of the Sunday School and Jr. High students and their research about SAYFO. With the help of many dedicated church members, we were able to create a village scene as children reenacted the massacre. Brave families shared and told their own heartbreaking personal accounts sharing an inspiring commemoration of the martyrs.

The Church Program was led by His Eminence Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan, His Grace Bishop Serapion, Rev. Fr. Yusuf Kallo, and several of the Revered Fathers from the Syriac and Coptic Churches. The priests, choir, and youth members chanted prayers in English. Sermons presented by their Eminences reflected upon the sufferings and martyrdom Christians are facing. After prayers everyone was invited to the social hall for sweets and refreshments prepared by the Ladies Auxiliary.
