Condemnation StatementJuly,28 2024The Archdiocese of the Western US strongly condemns the recent portrayal of the Last Supper during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. This depiction, meant to celebrate global unity and culture, displayed a lack of sensitivity and respect for one of the most sacred moments in the Christian tradition.
The Last Supper, a cornerstone of our faith, holds great spiritual significance for millions of Christians worldwide. It symbolizes unity, sacrifice, and faith. Portraying it in a way that seems to trivialize or commercialize its sacred essence is not just offensive but deeply hurtful to believers. This insensitive artistic choice undermines these values and disregards the beliefs and sentiments of a significant portion of the global population, which is deeply disheartening.
We urgently call upon the Olympic Committee and the organizers of the opening ceremony to issue a formal, public apology to the Christian community. This is a crucial step towards acknowledging the offense caused and beginning the process of healing and understanding.
Respect for diversity and inclusivity must always be central to the Olympic spirit. We hope this regrettable incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of cultural and religious sensitivity in all global events and the need for all involved to approach such symbols with the respect and reverence they deserve.
Sincerely,
+ Clemis Eugene Kaplan, Metropolitan
