Archdeacon Shukri Kutlo
March 3, 1918 - September 17, 2014
Shukri Kutlo was born in Jerusalem in March 03, 1918. After moving to Bethlehem, Shukri attended the church school as a small boy.
In 1925, he was appointed to serve on the altar by the late patriarch Mor Ignatius Elias III.
In 1929, Shukri attended the public school in Bethlehem until 1933; he then went to the public school in Jerusalem for four years and graduated in 1927.
In 1938 Shukri began his career working with the government of Palestine. He then transferred to Ramallah in 1945 due to unrest in Jerusalem.
In 1947 he married the faithful Saideh Afram and together they had four children: Philip, Henry, Norman and Linda.
In 1955, the family moved to Amman, Jordan due to his job with the government. The family lived there until 1966 when they came to USA.
In United States the family thrived in the church and business.
From his childhood Shukri served the Syriac Orthodox Church as deacon, learned the Treasury of melodies known in Syriac as Beth Gazo and became the head of the Gudo (choir), and served in several boards and institutions of the church in Jerusalem, Amman, and in East and West USA.
Shukri Kutlo became full Deacon in 1992 by the late Archbishop Mor Athanasius Samuel. And in May 8, 2005 Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan ordained Dn. Shukri Kutlo, Archdeacon for the Western Archdiocese, as recognition of his services and dedication to the Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch.
The Archdeacon Shukri and his family lost their beloved Saideh in December 2003.
The Archdeacon Shukri was always very devoted to his church from the time he was a little boy up until his passing away to the heavenly abodes on September 17, 2014.
His Eminence and the Clergy of the Western Archdioceses extend their prayers and heartfelt condolences to the deceased family and his relatives.
