2nd Annual Children’s DayOctober,20 2014The archdiocese held the 2nd Annual Children’s Day on Saturday, October 11th at St. Ephraim cathedral. The event was under the auspices of His Eminence Archbishop Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan and there was 180 children from the following participating churches: St. Ephraim, St. George, St. Peter, St. Elias, St. Mary, and St. Helena.
The event began with prayers in Syriac and English and several children participated by reading scripture verses and sharing why they enjoy coming to the children’s event. His Eminence spoke to the children in his sermon expressing his joy in seeing all the angels in the church. He told the children that they must come to church always, grow up in the church and be close to God. It is good to meet other Sunday School Students from our churches and have new friendships.
After the prayers everyone took a group photo in the cathedral and then all the students enjoyed lunch in the social hall. Students were then divided into two age groups, 5- 9 and 10 - 13 and groups were formed. The groups were students from the participating churches - that way students would have a chance to meet new friends from other churches.
Then the Bible activities began. For the younger age group (5-9 yrs old) students had 4 stations - arts/crafts, make a poster, create a skit, and question/answer time with very Rev. Fr. Shara. The older children (10-13 yrs old) had 4 stations as well: multiple choice quiz, make a poster, create a skit, and question/answer time with Rev. Fr. John.
Students enjoyed rotating from station to station doing various activities. They had a chance to work together with one another and learn about the beatitudes which was the theme of the Children’s Day event.
At the conclusion of the event students received special gifts for attending: a sports bottle, beatitudes bookmark, and participant ribbon. His Eminence extended his happiness with the children for coming and told everyone next year’s Children’s Day event will be at St. George. He also thanked all the teachers for organizing the event and for bringing all the children together for this special day.
