WORKING FOR A WAGEJanuary,3 2017In all labor there is profit, But idle chatter[b] leads only to poverty. Proverbs 14:23
Many men are dissatisfied with their jobs. You, too, may wonder from time to time whether you're in the right career. This is especially true if you're beginning to experience burnout at your workplace, or if you're in a profession where the markets are drying up. But more often than not, it's the day-to-day monotony of your job that eats away at your contentment. Either that, or you're working for a boss you can't stand.
The Bible puts things in perspective by reminding you that "in all labor there is profit." Your hourly wage might not be high, and it might not be your dream job, but if it's paying work, it's better than nothing-at least until you can find something more rewarding. Paul advised Christians, "Use your hands for good hard work" (Ephesians 4:28). While we would all rather be working smart, not hard, working hard is scriptural.
"Our people have to learn to be diligent in their work so that all necessities are met ... and they don't end up with nothing to show for their lives" (Titus 3:14). You must not only apply yourself to your work, but you must keep at it faithfully, day after day, month after month.
Although ultimately you'll only be fully content when you're doing what God designed you for, you can find a measure of contentment even in imperfect situations. You can do this by working "heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men" (Colossians 3:23).
