A limited explosion in the Banquet Hall of St. Afrem the Syriac Orthodox Cathedral in Geneta, Södertälje, Sweden.September,19 2018Södertälje: For the first time a limited explosion last night targeted a building belonging to the Syrian Orthodox Church in Sodertalje, without causing human casualties.
Stockholm police spokesperson Peer Fahlström told Swedish news agency that the blast took place in the Geneta area at a church rally and there was no suspect so far.
A blast was reported to have arrived at 1:00 p.m. local time, but Fahlström did not disclose further information about the explosion or the type of material that exploded.
He said that the police technical teams were present at the site and were trying to inspect him for the explosive material.
Police cordoned off the area around the building in order to be able to work at the site and secure evidence. The cordon was reduced in the early hours of the morning after police confirmed there was no risk of further explosions.
According to Fahlström, there is no sign of threats to the Syrian Orthodox Church, to which thousands of Syriac immigrants belong.
Later, information from eyewitnesses in Södertälje said the explosion took place in a wedding hall of the church building.
